Field Change Order Doc No Q61-08-001 Communicator / ROM Upgrade. 01/06/88 Introduction In order to maintain BABT approval for this equipment, the rework detailed herein shall only be carried out by an Acorn approved repair site, unless otherwise authorised by Acorn Computers Ltd in writing. The rework consists of removing the spacer from the ROM UPGRADE PCB & using a purpose piece of non-conductive foam for its continued support thereafter. Foam piece = 80 x 40mm / 1/2" thick / Expanded Polyethylene. Rework Procedure For each Communicator upgraded as detailed in this instruction the following format shall be logged: i Serial number of Communicator. ii Date of rework. iii Location (site) at which rework performed. This information shall be retained for inspection by Acorn. Important: The engineer shall ensure that the power jack & phone jack are not connected prior to this upgrade procedure. Take an issue 1 communicator AFB05 & rework as follows: 1 Disconnect all cables and clear any associated peripheral devices. 2 Take Communicator to a suitable area for modification. 3 Turn Communicator onto its keys & remove the four corner retaining screws & place to one side. 4 Separate the two halves & upon doing so disconnect the keyboard cable from its connector on the main PCB (PL3) & remove case upper. 5 Remove the ROM UPGRADE mounting screw & discard. 6 Carefully remove the ROM UPGRADE from its retaining sockets. 7 Inspect for any signs of damage, repair as necessary. 8 Remove corner spacer from ROM UPGRADE PCB & discard. 9 Replace PCB. Firm & even pressure should be applied to ensure that all the header connecting pins are fully located in each of the 28-pin EPROM sockets. 10 Fit the purpose foam piece squarely onto the unpopulated portion of the ROM UPGRADE. 11 Reassemble the Communicator case lower to the case upper. This is the reverse of that for disassembly. Do ensure that the keyboard connector cable is properly reconnected to the main PCB, & all four case screws are securely tightened. 12 The reworked Communicator shall now be tested as in 0252,632/T. If the unit fails the test / verification detailed in said document then the unit should be checked to ensure that the rework has been done correctly.
