Acorn Co-Sponsors Verbatim Summer Computer Camps for Kids

Cambridge, UK. 22 July, 1994

Acorn Computers, the leading supplier of computers to UK schools, is helping nearly 100 schoolchildren to explore the world of information technology this summer by co-sponsoring two week-long residential summer camps. The camps, which are taking place between 25th-29th July at schools in Surrey and Staffordshire, have been organised as part of Europe-wide celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the data storage supplier, Verbatim.

The aim of the camps is to inspire, inform and entertain young people between the ages of 11 and 15 by providing access to computers and industry-based technology. Acorn and other industry partners, including IBM, Canon, Microsoft and Intel, have assisted by loaning some of the very latest computer hardware and software, and by providing guest speakers.

Acorn is providing a wide range of up-to-the-minute equipment for the camps, including the new Risc PCs, successfully launched earlier this year, and some of the best-selling educational computers from the Acorn Archimedes range, the A4000 and A3020, together with a selection of educational, creative and office software. Acorn Pocket Books, the versatile and powerful hand-held personal computers used increasingly in schools by teachers and pupils alike, will be also available for children to use during the week.

Roger Broadie, Acorn's Education Marketing Manager, is speaking at both locations during the week about 'New Literacy', that is, 'the use of new technologies to develop literacy for life'. His talk will look at the impact of the information age on the world of work in the future, and will encourage the children to consider for themselves what new skills they need to develop to communicate effectively in an IT-rich world.

Founded in 1978, with 1993 revenues of £54.3m, Acorn Computers is the premier supplier of IT solutions to UK education and has been the leading provider of 32-bit RISC based personal computers since 1987. Acorn works closely with a strong community of industry partners, users and software developers to provide innovative technology solutions for the education, consumer, publishing and international markets.

The Acorn Computer Group is a holding company for Acorn Computers Limited, Acorn Australia, Acorn New Zealand, Acorn GmbH and Online Media. Acorn Computer Group owns 43% of Advanced RISC Machines Ltd. Online Media, a division of the Acorn Computer Group, was launched in 1994 with the mission to design world class, interactive multimedia products.
