Latest multi-processor technology on show

11 October, 1994

Acorn Computers, the leading supplier of low-cost 32-bit RISC based computers, will be demonstrating, at this year's Acorn World show, working examples of future capabilities of the Risc PC. A range of developments will be previewed, giving show attendees an indication of the potential for Acorn computers in the future and show some of the options that could be bought to market over the forthcoming months and years.

Current plans should ensure that the following operating system developments will be on show: OS/2 on Acorn's PC cards, Unix native on Risc PC, TAOS (a multiprocessor operating system) on ARM processors.

Mike O'Riordan, Sales and Marketing Director at Acorn Computers, commented:

"The last year has seen Acorn launch some of the most innovative and ground-breaking systems available. We have chosen Acorn World '94 as the place where we lift the veil on some of the most exciting future Risc PC developments. This technology has never been seen before outside the Acorn developer community, and we are confident that it will be of great interest to the end user as well as the industry as a whole."
He continued:
"The range of technology we will be unveiling covers such diverse areas as ATM links, the Internet and open system networking."
The Risc PC will be showcased to its fullest extent, demonstrating its powerful cross platform functionality, expandability and unique upgradeability. A seven 'slice' Risc PC, configured with a range of add-on devices, will be shown at Acorn World '94 to demonstrate the flexibility of the system. These add-on devices will include new 16 bit sound cards, SCSI II, Network Interface cards and new digitising cards.

Networking will be core to the demonstration, CD Rom support for Access networks will be on show as well as Microsoft and Novell based servers serving RISC OS applications.

Acorn fans will also have the opportunity to sign up to the Acorn Enthusiasts Scheme. Competitions to encourage people to join the scheme will offer prizes of ARM 700 and 486 processor cards for the Risc PC and a multi-processor adapter board to enable the Risc PC to carry several ARM processors. The competitions will be based on a multiple choice question paper with a tie breaker. Full details will be made available at the show.

Acorn World '94 takes place at Wembley Exhibition Centre from October 28-30th. The show has already attracted support from many leading companies and is set to be the largest ever showcase for Acorn products and services worldwide. The show will include a series of themed feature areas, providing a glimpse of technological innovation in the interactive media, publishing, education and home business sectors. These areas will demonstrate the innovative synergy Acorn can provide between the home, the classroom and the office.
