Launches Multimedia Project Thanks to Acorn & Tesco Computers for Schools

Cambridge, UK. 30 November, 1994

Acorn Computers, the leading supplier of computers to UK schools, and the London Borough of Ealing are launching Ealing Education IT Centre as a new Acorn in Education Centre (AEC) to provide invaluable technology support and advice to local teachers. Michael Herman, Director of Education for Ealing, Elizabeth Majumdar, Chair of the Education Committee and John McMahon from Acorn Computers will officially open the 60th AEC on 1st December 1994. This will be followed by specialist workshops and demonstrations for local teachers showing how Acorn computers can be used to help learning across the curriculum for children of all ages.

Ealing IT Centre will also be launching the Ealing Multimedia Project on 1st December. This will involve children in local schools producing multimedia project work about their local community which will be collated by Ealing IT Centre to create an educational resource to share among all schools in the area.

Five Acorn A5000 computers, gained through Computers for Schools 94, have been given to schools to complete the project work. Co-ordinated by Ealing Education centre, generous schools across the Ealing area pooled their spare Tesco Computers for Schools vouchers and collections were made by other members of the local community to ensure that the multimedia project could take place.

Ealing Education Centre houses one of the best-equipped IT education centres in the London region, with two suites of Acorn machines, a MIDI music studio and multimedia unit with CD ROM and professional video editing facilities.

The Acorn in Education Centre initiative was established in 1992 to provide teachers with educational IT support and to raise awareness of the true value of technology in schools. There are currently 59 Centres in the UK which teachers can visit to ask questions, try out computer systems, investigate and research new developments in educational IT to keep development plans up to date, view software and curriculum materials and participate in scheduled and tailored training courses.

Founded in 1978, with 1993 revenues of £54.3m, Acorn Computers is the premier supplier of IT solutions to UK education and has been the leading provider of 32-bit RISC based personal computers since 1987.
